Lawn & Garden FAQ

  • Irrigation
    • Why do I need an irrigation system?
      • Your lawn needs regular watering to keep it looking its best.  Hoses and sprinklers are tedious, messy and lack the control of an installed irrigation system.  This can lead to overwatering in some areas while other spots go thirsty.
      • A properly installed system will provide the right amount of water for each type of plant ensuring that no area is overlooked, providing the homeowner with more reliable watering patterns.  It will also continue to water at its scheduled time even if you go on vacation!
      • A more efficient distribution system, installed irrigation can also save you a bit on your water bill.
    • Are there any benefits to installing a separate water meter for my irrigation system?
      • Some Atlanta areas charge you a dollar for sewer for every dollar that you spend on water.  A dedicated irrigation meter can save the sewage costs.  Contact your local water company to determine whether you fall into this category, as well as for pricing and installation of the additional meter.  Should you choose this option, please ensure the meter is positioned near the irrigation tie-in.
    • Do I need to winterize my irrigation system?
      • We recommend winterization to prevent damage to pipes or parts from freezing temperatures.  Winterization involves draining the water and turning the system off until Spring.  You will need a start-up service before turning the system back on.
    • What is the best time of day to water?
      • You can reduce the opportunity for disease and water loss if you water early in the morning when sun and wind are low.  Morning is preferable to evening because plant leaves that consistently remain damp overnight are more susceptible to rot and  mold.  However, watering at any time of day is better than not watering a thirsty yard at all.
  • Lawn Care & Maintenance
    • Best Practices
      • Fertilize annually
      • Mow frequently with a sharp blade, cutting no more than 1/3 of the height at a time
      • Grass always needs water, sunlight, air and nutrients.  The levels of each will depend on the type of grass you have.  Click here for more information:
        • Bermuda
          • Bermuda needs full sun to thrive.  Though it is drought-tolerant, it does not live well in shaded or mostly-shaded ares.
          • A quick and profligate grower, bermuda needs frequent mowing.  Maintain growth at .5 - 1.5 inches tall.
          • Bermuda loves fertilizer and does well with multiple applications throughout the growing season.  The first application of a high-nitrogen should occur in about mid-April, when bermuda is coming out of its dormant state.  The second should occur 6-8 weeks later, as directed by the instructions on the bag.  You can apply a "winterizer" fertilizer in October to prevent any cold-weather damage.
        • Fescue
          • Fescue needs shade to thrive.  Do not try to plant this in areas of full or mostly sun or you will be disappointed with the results.
          • Water about 1 inch per week.
          • Check your lawn pH.  Fescue prefers a pH above 6.5.   Add lime if your pH is too low.
          • Fertilize in February, April and September
          • Aerate the soil and overseed between the first of March and mid-April, and again between mid-September and mid-October.
          • Mowing - under normal conditions, maintain fescue at about 2 - 3 inches tall.  During dry seasons, allow to grow to 3 - 4 inches.
        • Zoysia
          • Zoysia prefers full sun to moderate shade.
          • Water 1.5 - 2 inches per week.
          • For best results, plant zoysia sod from mid-May through mid-August.
          • Zoysia well with multiple fertilizer applications throughout the growing season.  The first application of a high-nitrogen should occur in about mid-April, when bermuda is coming out of its dormant state.  The second should occur 6-8 weeks later, as directed by the instructions on the bag.  You can apply a "winterizer" fertilizer in October to prevent any cold-weather damage.
    • Will mowing in a different direction help my lawn?
      • Yes it will!  If you change direction each time you mow, your grass will be less likely to develop in a set pattern and blades will grow more erect, thus ensuring a more even cut.
